Learn to Sew

Learn to Sew with Our Detailed Guide | KettleandCloth.com

Are you new to the world of sewing, or are you hesitant to jump in because you’re unsure where to start? Not to worry! I compiled this guide just for new sewists to get up and running—you can do this!

I’ve packed these guides with the basics, plus some tips and tricks it took me a while to figure out (sometimes the hard way). With this knowledge under your belt, you’ll be well on your way to your dream handmade wardrobe in no time.

This series is a work in progress, and I’ll be adding tutorials and additional step-by-step guides in the coming weeks. In the meantime, feel free to send me any suggestions for future tutorials you’d like to see here!

First thing’s first: How do I use my machine?

Probably the most important question, unless you have the patience to do all your sewing by hand (in which case, rock on!). If you’re like me or most of my friends starting out on this wonderful sewing adventure, you probably inherited an older model machine, so the below guide uses my trusty Brother as a model, but the basics for most machines are the same.

Note: If in doubt, consult your machine’s manual! If the manual that came with your sewing machine has been lost to time, many manuals are available to download online.
